“At night we are all strangers, even to ourselves.”
—Alexander McCall Smith, from The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (Polygon, 1998)
If I had the time. If only I had the time. Every corner of my house would have a little table in it. And on that table would be an assortment of vintage vases and bottles, each with a sprig of a summer flower. When I drive out to work every morning, through Bandra’s streets, I’m always captivated by the brightness of the bougainvillea, the delicate fire of the jacaranda and the absolutely seductive blooms of the gulmohar. Summer brings with it its sticky, sweaty heat but its flowers. Oh, its flowers. They almost make the unforgiving sunshine a little more bearable.

I have looked for your face in the patterns of the ice. In the dark,
I have pored over the loss of you like pale gold."

Promissory Note
If I die before you
which is all but certain
then in the moment
before you will see me
become someone dead
in a transformation
as quick as a shooting star’s
I will cross over into you
and ask you to carry
not only your own memories
but mine too until you
too lie down and erase us
both together into oblivion.

“Don’t worry, Bo. I’m not really concerned about Mitt or Rick or Newt. I just want to continue being a good President. A President who faces challenges head on, who sometimes has to make the difficult choices while continuing to lead our country out of the abyss and the morass and other words that end in two letters S. I’m not messing around with Etch-A-Sketches and repealing universal healthcare or interfering in personal relationships or treating women like they’re afterthoughts instead of human beings. Am I right, Bo? Yesh I am, yesh I am! Who’s the cutest dog? Who’s the cutest dog? BO is the cutest dog, yesh you are! Now let’s go do what’s right for America and win in November!”

Starting here, what do you want to remember?
How sunlight creeps along a shining floor?
What scent of old wood hovers, what softened
sound from outside fills the air?
Will you ever bring a better gift for the world
than the breathing respect that you carry
wherever you go right now? Are you waiting
for time to show you some better thoughts?
When you turn around, starting here, lift this
new glimpse that you found; carry into evening
all that you want from this day. This interval you spent
reading or hearing this, keep it for life—
What can anyone give you greater than now,
starting here, right in this room, when you turn around?
